A rare opportunity

This week’s Friday challenge on StyleForum was “Heavyweight tag team championship” - pair up with another forum member and wear an outfit centered around a common theme. As someone noticed in the thread:

Do you guys know what this challenge reminds me of?

When my daughter was like 7 or 8, she would call her bestest friend at night before bed, and they would meticulously plan to be wearing matching clothes to school the next day.

I usually don’t dress up too much these days as I am on summer vacations, but I really couldn’t miss this opportunity. So I paired up with cleav31, who just happens to be one of my favourite posters on SF, and above you see 50% of the tag team “Checkmates(s)”. For 100% see here

Ermenegildo Zegna silk and cashmere SC | Belisario shirt | Holliday & Brown repp tie | Drake’s wool/silk PS | Charles Tyrwhitt lightweight flannel trousers | Edward Green Chelsea in mink suede

Navy, orange and white
It just so happens that today is the day before the annual university ceremony for conferring doctoral degrees, so I will spend the day conducting lots of rehearsals for the big ceremony and ending the day with a cocktail party for all involved. Today is also the first real early summer day we have had so far, so what better way to celebrate that than doning a really summery tie and adding some white trousers to that.

Roped
The #menswear community currently has a serious crush on the lightly or un-padded shoulders that are typical of Neapolitan tailoring. However, the fact is that it is a silhouette that requires a rather particular body type to be really flattering. People, like me, that are not very broad-shouldered are really not well-suited to wear un-padded jackets. On the other hand, a jacket with some structure to the shoulders can do wonders for the overall silhouette. The vintage Cifonelli DB above has the characteristic roped shoulders that Cifonelli are known for, which helps balance out my height, despite my relative lack of “upper-body definition”. So don’t get caught up in whatever the latest #menswear hype may be without considering what actually flatters you most.
